Accommodation was provided for a crew of eight and a maximum of 74 passengers. Day compartments were convertible into sleeping accommodation for up to 40 passengers in upper and lower berths. Also, a special dining saloon and associated galley, private drawing room, dressing rooms and lavatories were also onboard. In addition to the above, there was room for some 10,500 lbs. of cargo.

Boeing designed this flying boat especially for Pan Am’s operation over the North Atlantic. Pan Am later used the aircraft on it’s pioneering routes over the Pacific. The Clippers gained a wonderful reputation due their reliability on Pan Am’s San Francisco to Hong Kong trans-Pacific route. During the war, several 314s were turned over to the military for cargo use. By the end of the war, and the fact that many new landing strips had been built throughout the Pacific, the heyday of the flying boat had passed into history.
